History of OHSA

Many residents of Ogemaw County Michigan reported traveling long distances to use public shooting ranges because there were none available locally. A small group got together on 27 Jan 2014 with the intent of trying to remedy that situation. The Ogemaw Hills Sportsmen Association (OHSA) was formed as a non-profit corporation under Michigan law, which is organized and shall be operated in accordance with the meaning and provisions of the federal tax-exempt regulations. On 12 Nov 2014 we achieved 501(c)3 status.

The objectives of the OHSA are as follows:

  • Promote and provide shooting sports recreational activities/facilities that include firearm, archery, hunting, fishing, safety, wildlife conservation, and educational/information to community residents and members of the organization.
  • To obtain, operate, manage, and maintain the facilities to support the above.
  • To engage in fundraising activities, assess membership dues and user fees to apply towards the costs and expenses in the operation of this endeavor.

The Board of Directors is responsible for the strategic management that will govern the daily activities of the corporation as provided for in the Bylaws.

In 2017 OHSA leased the property at 2025 M-55 in West Branch, Michigan 48661 on the southwest corner of Dam Road and M-55. We began to transform the property into outdoor and indoor archery ranges. Some renovation of the buildings and site cleanup were done in 2017. April 1, 2018 a Grant from the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in coordination with the Michigan DNR was awarded to OHSA. Utilizing this Grant in conjunction with donations from businesses and individuals in the local community, a 40’ x 40’ addition was added to the building for the indoor range, a fence was installed for the outdoor range and site improvements have been made. The Grant was exhausted March 31, 2020 and although we were close to being completed, the COVID-19 lock down/quarantine stopped us in our tracks. We managed to get the outdoor range open Oct 1, 2020 and the indoor range had a soft opening shortly after the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted in March 2021.
